I departed on U.S. Airways flight #12 at 10:01am for my flight to New York, JFK airport. Suddenly, my planned uneventful flight turned into a medical issue. About one third of the way to JFK, I attempted to stand up from my aisle seat when I heard and felt a pop in my right knee and fell back into my seat in moderate pain. Immediately, I knew I had a possible tour-ending problem. I knew I had torn something in my knee. After sitting for several minutes with my mind racing with my options, I knew I simply was NOT going to miss this special tour under any circumstances. My knee gave out three more times on the flight, each time I attempted to walk. I quickly made a plan. I asked the flight attendant to request a wheelchair at JFK. I made my way to my planned hotel, the Double Tree JFK Airport, checked in, and inquired about an urgent care facility. The hotel shuttle took me to the urgent care which was located near Terminal 7 at JFK. After an examination by the doctor, my suspicion was verified by the doctor; I had torn something in my knee. He could not confirm this and advised me that I would need to get an MRI once I returned home. My only option was a knee immobilizer to keep my knee stable. So this is how my special trip to Egypt began.

The staff of the Double Tree Hotel were exceptionally helpful in assisting me with my medical issue. They arranged their shuttle to drop me off at the urgent care facility then picked me back up once I was finished.

My flight from JFK to Cairo departed at 6:30pm on Egypt Air. I arrived at the airport early due to my gimpy, immobilized knee. The Egypt Air staff were very accommodating and kind. This flight, although 10 hours and 45 minutes long, was pleasantly uneventful. However, for those people who prefer a cocktail with meals, alcohol is not served on Egypt Air.

I arrived in Cairo at 12:15pm and was transferred from the arrival area of Terminal 1 to my connecting flight departure area. I had quite a long layover as my Egypt Air flight #701 did not depart until 5:00pm. While I waited, I watched for Seven Wonders Travel owner, Janice Brannon, and Quest Travel President, Mohamed Nazmy, who were accompanying me and two other passengers on the Jordanian extension.

After meeting Janice and Mohamed on the plane, we had a quick 1 hour 20 minute flight to Amman. Upon arrival, we were greeted by the Jordanian tour operator and whisked through immigration and customs. We then met the other two passengers who were already in the tour operator's shuttle and proceeded to our hotel.

The InterContinental Jordan was amazing. Check-in was fast and we took a 30 minute break before having dinner at the hotel in the Bourj Al Hamam Lebanese restaurant. The food and service was excellent and I experienced my first puff from a water pipe. As a non-smoker, it was interesting to try but not something I would do on a continuing basis.

Early this morning, we met our tour guide, Ra'ed Hammouri. After brief introductions, we were off to our first sight, Mt. Nebo. This revered Christian sight is located on a mountain ridge that overlooks the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Ra'ed gave us an excellent tour and explanation of this famous Christian sight. Even for the less religious, the ancient mosaics and architecture are extremely impressive.

Madaba is a wonderful little town that is best known for mosaic map that covers the floor of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Ra'ed again gave us an impressive explanation of the history of the church and the mosaic map. If you have enough time, which I did not on this trip, there are many stores near the church that have great souvenirs and all the purchases help to support the local community.
From here we continued our drive toward Petra but first we had a quick stop for a tour and lunch at Kerak Castle. - Tuesday, January 30, 2007
