The nation was captivated by reports of a missile launch off the coast of California captured by a KCBS news helicopter around 5:00 PM PST on Monday, November 8. So far, the most likely explanation is that what appeared to be a missile was actually the contrail from a jet at altitude.
We did some research and have identified a commercial flight path that would have crossed over the vicinity of the sighting: US Airways Flight 808 from Honolulu International Airport (HNL) to Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX).
ATC logs and flight path information put the flight in the right position at the right time to have created a contrail visible to the KCBS chopper pilot.

US Airways Flight 808 departs HNL @ 10:07 AM Honolulu Time (12:07 pm Pacific Time), about 5 hours before the sighting in LA...headed to Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX).
Images of what appeared to be a missile launch were captured by a KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening around 5:00 PM. The location of the object estimated to be 35 miles west of L.A. in the vicinity of Catalina Island.
According to ATC tracking data on http://www.flightaware.com US Airways Flight 808 was at latitude 33.30, lng -118.59 at 5:00 PM, very close to Catalina Island at an altitude of 37,000 feet. This flight could have easily created the mysterious contrail.
A Flightaware user with the handle liembo has some very thorough research that corroborates these findings. Here's a link to research results that he posted: http://www.bahneman.com/liem/tmp/it_was_awe808.png
